There are lots of fabulous poets and poetry resources out there to inspire, enjoy or help you. Here are some of my favourites.
Not to be confused with Basshunter from Celebrity Big Brother, this site is a great resource for reading poems from all over the world; Current, historical, published, unpublished, famous, not famous, they're all here. You can also add your own work to the site.
Established by Andrew Motion, The poetry Archive is the world's largest and best equipped collection of poets reading their own work. It really is quite ideal.
Niall is one of my favourite poets working today. He is not only a supremely decent poet and a nice chap, but he runs a couple of top-notch poetry nights in London too. He gets a double thumbs-up from me.
Rod McKuen was the reason I decided to go back to writing full-time in 2005. I'm an avid collector of his books, and his early 70s compendium 'Seasons in the Sun' was one of the first poetry books I ever owned. Rod has sold a phenomenal amount of books in his career and yet it always amazes me how few people in the UK have heard of him and how little of his work is currently available in print. Rod's poems are eminently accessible (but not simple) beautiful pieces that you can bag up and take with you for all time.
I used to know Neil from my time as a 'comedy' poet in the 90s. I always enjoyed his sets and the fact that he rarely took himself or the bits and bobs that life threw at him too seriously. I was delighted when, after a long break, I made contact with Neil again. He really is one of the finest comedy performance poets on the scene.
Not a poet but a very poetic band. Totally unique, great lyrics and enormous fun. See them live. You won't be disappointed.
