The Relentless Nature of Dust, Phil Lucas’s third collection of poems, provides another foray into themes that have already established Phil as one of the most lively and exciting voices in contemporary poetry. Seashore gems blend effortlessly with cutting considerations upon the nature of work and lightning-witted notes from the minutiae of everyday life. It’s all mixed with Phil’s own recollections from his self-described “sitcom-style existence.” This is highly accessible work that reaches out not only to poetry lovers, but to those who, maybe, didn’t even know they liked the genre. Such is Lucas’s pull.
Not that accessibility is to demean this work as simple. Lucas’s writing perfectly commands our attention with a real originality and depth. As Phil says,
“I write my poetry to be accessible. It’s hugely important to me that poems should be felt immediately. Feel them first, that’s the most fundamental thing. If you are then kind enough to deem one of my poems worthy of your time, then I hope there’s enough there for you to explore further.”
This is Lucas’s most sharpened and accomplished work to date, and one that is guaranteed to find this lively poetic voice many new, enthusiastic followers. The Relentless Nature of Dust is on sale from 1st February 2012.
